Understanding Vehicle Registration Charges
Vehicle registration charges in India include multiple components such as the registration fee, road tax, smart card fee, number plate fee, and other applicable charges. The total cost varies significantly by state and vehicle type.
Road tax is the largest component of vehicle registration charges and is collected by the state government. The road tax rate varies from 4% to 20% of the vehicle ex-showroom price depending on the state and vehicle type.
When you purchase a new vehicle, the dealer typically handles the registration process and collects the registration charges from you. However, you can also register the vehicle yourself at the RTO to save on dealer charges.
